Values, Inc. – A Must Read for all Business Leaders

Values, Inc

Some organizations just flat out get it right when it comes to doing business the right way. The Dwyer Group, based in Waco, Texas is one of them. They understand that people are their most valuable resource and they live by a unique code of values.

I had the pleasure of reading Values, Inc. written by Dina Dwyer-Owens, Executive Chairwoman of The Dwyer Group. I believe that this book is a must read for all leaders. Dina shares The Dwyer Groups code of values in the book and provides real life examples of those values in action.

What is truly amazing about the book and the stories within it, is that it really isn’t a traditional business book. Sure, there are examples used from some great companies (and some not so great – I’m talking to you, Enron!), but there are also more personal examples. Having values is not just for successful organizations. As you find out in this book, having values is for a lot of not so successful organizations as well. “It’s been said that 95 percent of companies that have a code of values don’t even use it,” Dwyer-Owens said. The key of course, is something Dina and The Dwyer Group understand. You must actually LIVE by your values. They are not just talk.

As a leader, if you have a clear set of values and you live by those values, you can make a positive difference in your family, business, community and in our world. We need more values-based leaders. If you want to know why there are not more companies that live out their values like The Dwyer Group, all you have to do is look at the leaders of those other companies. Leaders create values within organizations. Hopefully they do so with the help of others to make it a collaborative approach. Those same leaders must practice what they preach. They must personally live out those values and positively influence followers to do so as well. Remember that people become like their leader. That is how you can turn any organization into Values, Inc. The Dwyer Group is proof that this will impact the bottom line in a positive way. It won’t limit success. It will help you grow, the right way.

I have known Dina Dwyer-Owens for a long time. I truly believe that she BELIEVES what she says in her new book. I have seen her and The Dwyer Group practice what they preach. I have seen the amazing results that have come from this. Dina’s personal story is special to me because of how important the influence of her father, Don Dwyer (founder of The Dwyer Group) was in her life. I can relate with her on this as I do what I do because of my father.

Values, Inc. invites a movement to live right and do right in business and in life for a world in need of direction,” Dwyer-Owens said. This book absolutely does this. I highly encourage you to read it. It is an easy read, but it is certainly not simple. All leaders need direction. All leaders need to understand the importance of living right and positively influencing others. Values, Inc. will motivate you to continue to live out your own values. If you don’t have clearly defined values, it will help you create your own list. It will make a difference in your life.
